You should be cleaning a gross area in your house more regularly – it’s something you use every day

WHEN you clean your house, you should focus on the things you engage with every day – and there's one part of the house you probably need to give more attention.

Head to the kitchen for this cleaning job, which experts say you need to be completing more regularly.

According to home experts at House Digest, you need to replace the filter on your refrigerator's water dispenser on a regular basis – and cleaning the area more frequently wouldn't hurt.

"Some modern refrigerators have a display screen that will tell you when the filter needs replaced, but not all," the pros wrote.

And even if your fridge's display says the filter is fine, you should stick to a schedule anyway: "Even those that do may be faulty and inaccurate."

Your refrigerator's filter acts just like a faucet attachment or filter jug, keeping bacteria, metals, and particulate matter out of your water.

Once your filter's worn out, those materials can enter your water supply, which will do more than just impact the taste.

"Drinking this water can cause headaches, stomach pains, fever, and even kidney failure," the experts warn.

According to House Digest, changing the filter twice a year should be enough.

You can set a six-month reminder on your calendar for the very easy task. Unless the filter connects directly to your water line, you shouldn't need professional help.

Your water dispenser's filter should be easy to find, the experts write.

"Most are inside the fridge and are accompanied by a clear indicator," the pros explained. "If not, double-check your owner's manual or look online."

Your water filter will likely be one of two styles: a twist-on filter or a push-in filter.

The names give away how easy they are to change.

"To install, simply twist off the old one and twist on the new one until it clicks into place," the experts instructed.

"Push-in filters simply need to be pushed in and out for removal and installation."

And while you wait for your next filter change, don't forget to clean the exterior of your water dispenser with a disinfecting spray or wipe at least once a week.
