Why have Jersey Shore ocean water temps been shockingly cold lately? - nj.com

The heat index, how hot it feels when the air temperature is combined with the humidity, will soar to 100 degrees or higher in New Jersey on Tuesday Aug. 9, as the long heat wave continues. But despite the steamy air, the ocean has been very cold along parts of the Jersey Shore.National Weather Service

The pavement is hot. The sidewalks are hot. And the sand is hot.

But along some areas of the Jersey Shore, the ocean water is not so hot — or even warm, despite the long, steamy heat wave. We’re talking in the mid-50s, toe-numbing, take-your-breath-away cold in stark contrast to the scorching hot air temperatures.

While the heat has been on, a persistent SW wind has led to more upwelling along the coast. Water temps in the 60s to even upper 50s along the immediate coast this morning have produced a narrow area of sea fog seen in blue on this satellite product. #NJwx #DEwx pic.twitter.com/Cxsoi51s3n

The excessive heat continues today. We have upgraded the urban corridor and portions of central/eastern New Jersey to an Excessive Heat Warning and expanded the Heat Advisory through the rest of southern New Jersey and Delaware. 🌡️♨️🥵#PAwx #NJwx #MDwx #DEwx pic.twitter.com/vQcAJlHBss
