The Discovery Museum has free family events planned three days a week, every week, of the school holidays

Don’t sit inside this summer, take a trip down to Newcastle’s Discovery Museum to experience a wide range of free, family fun.

So what’s on? Every Tuesday, the museum hosts the ‘Discovery Days’ event on the creation stations of ‘Play + Invent’ up on the second floor. There, you can make a pop-up book of Newcastle, a kaleidoscope or even a rocket wand!

Every week there’s a different theme. It’s all free, just drop in (there are £1 and £2 options available too).

Visit on a Wednesday and you may catch Jesse the amazing Bubbleologist, or get roped into taking part in the Wonky Olympics! There is a comedy act to get families moving and giggling, and the opportunity to become a master builder - creating super structures out of LEGO™.

Every Thursday is ‘Play on the Plaza’. These are outdoor events where one week you could be making water squirters and another week, flying frisbees.

For just 50p, explore the LEGO® mini-figures trail - can you follow the clues to find the hidden mini-figures? Unscramble the letters and you could be in with a chance of winning a brick-tastic prize!

You can travel through time in the Newcastle Story gallery through the ages from Roman times to the 20th century – watch out for the plague victim and the drunkard’s barrel!

The Science Maze on the second floor has interactive displays galore with things to poke, switch, fiddle and turn.

Get up close to a Victorian fire engine and some of the world’s first light bulbs! You can play air hockey too if you’re game.

With an RAF Red Arrows flight simulator for the brave (T&Cs apply) which costs just £3.75 per person, a gift shop and café it’s a great value day out for all the family.

It’s always free to get into the Discovery Museum, which showcases the best of Tyneside over three floors of inventions, world-firsts and interactive activities for curious minds.

Open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm on weekdays, and 11am to 4pm on weekends (except bank holidays when closed). No booking is required, just turn up and have fun!

The museum is very accessible with plenty of space. There’s a free water dispenser and a Changing Places toilet.

The events this summer across the venues of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM) are sponsored by Tyne and Wear Metro, part of the wider Ways to Play offer.

Find the Discovery Museum just a short walk from Central Station in Newcastle in Blandford Square.
