STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to summer, but it’s also one of the best times of the year for deals and discounts.

The holiday falls on Monday, May 30, this year.

And the long weekend is when a bunch of retailers will be offering notable Memorial Day deals — some of the best deals shopping experts have seen since the winter holidays, according to DealNews.com. There will be sales on mattresses, appliances, outdoor furniture and more.

Julie Ramhold, shopping expert at the website, said that consumers tend to see Memorial Day sales begin a few weeks before the holiday itself, but can expect to see most of the sales take place over the holiday weekend.

“Unlike many other holiday sales, Memorial Day events don’t necessarily end on the day itself or even the day after,” said Ramholf. “Some stretch through the end of the week, and others even go slightly beyond that. We actually saw Memorial Day–branded offers pop up as late as June 4 last year, so you should have plenty of time to shop.”

But don’t wait too long to check out these events, especially if you’re looking for a particular item or wear popular sizes.

Here’s a closer look at what sales you can expect this year, according to Ramhold.

It’s typically better to buy outdoor items like grills and patio furniture when summer is coming to an end, but that leaves little time to use the products before the season is over. Ramhold said the good news is, if you want to upgrade your outdoor space this summer, Memorial Day will offer some deals worth shopping.

Overstock.com can be a good option, as shoppers saw as much as 70% off for the 2021 sale and bonus discounts in specific categories, like an extra 20% off select patio and garden items.

This Kauai Outdoor Wicker Chaise Lounge (Set of 2) by Christopher Knight Home is being sold on Overstock for $385.88, down from $597.49. And this seven-piece outdoor dining set with rattan chairs is on sale for $854.35, a discount from its original price of $986.49.

Ramhold also suggested checking out home improvement stores like Home Depot, which took up to 70% off during its sale last year.

According to Ramhold, there are only a few times a year that are perfect for buying a mattress, and Memorial Day is one of them.

Tempur-Pedic will likely offer up to $500 off select sets like it did last year. This Sleep Number 360 pSE Special Edition Smart Bed in a queen size is on sale for $1,999 — $1,000 off its original $2,999 price tag. Its Sleep Number 360 m7 Smart Bed is available in a king size at $3,799, which is $700 cheaper than the original price of $4,499.

If you don’t mind shopping online, Purple is expected to offer a sale and take up to $450 off, while Casper may knock off 15% during its own sale. Purple is currently offering up to $300 off a mattress, plus $500 in savings on an Ascent Adjustable Base. The queen bed of its Purple Plus mattress starts at $1,699, instead of $1,899.

Casper’s Memorial Day sale is offering up to $800 off mattresses. Save $314 on its Original Hybrid Mattress. A queen bed is on sale for $1,440.75, down from $1,695.

Plenty of other retailers will put new beds on sale for their Memorial Day events. Ramhold suggested checking out JCPenney, Macy’s and warehouse stores like Sam’s Club.

If you need new large appliances, Memorial Day is a great time to shop deals, according to Ramhold.

Expect Best Buy to offer a variety of offers with free shipping, but be prepared to pay extra if your appliances need to be installed. And if you want to get rid of old appliances, that’s another extra charge.

Lowe’s and Home Depot, Ramhold added, will likely have sales on large appliances — possibly up to 50%.

Lowe’s is selling this Samsung 30-in 5 Burners 6-cu ft Self-cleaning Air Fry Convection Oven Freestanding Gas Range (Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel) for $949, down from its original price tag of $1,299. The retailer is also selling the Whirlpool 26.8-cu ft 3-Door 36-in French Door Refrigerator with Exterior Ice - Water Dispenser and Dual Ice Makers - Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel for just $2,969, instead of $3,299.

Or head to Home Depot and get this 5.8 cu. ft. Smart Wi-Fi Enabled Fan Convection Gas Single Oven Range with AirFry and EasyClean in Stainless Steel for $948, down from $1,149. If you need a new vacuum, consider the Dyson Ball Animal 2 Upright Vacuum Cleaner for $449, down from $499.
