BURTON Albion’s Family Zone was packed for a special eco-friendly session that took place before our home game against Forest Green.

The Family Zone takes place before every home game with Billy Brewer on hand and a host of indoor and outdoor activities on offer.

This special session was designed to highlight ways we could help the environment with Burton Albion Community Trust teaming up with Plant League, Ionic Water and Waste Savvy Staffs.

Brewers first team players Michael Mancienne and Ciaran Gilligan dropped in to meet fans and to check out the eco zone.

Planet League runs the biggest-ever football-themed climate action tournament, which aims to encourage fans to make more eco-conscious decisions in their everyday life to help save the planet as well as being able to represent their favourite club.

Fans had the opportunity to sign up to take part in the competition which starts on the 10th October and try out activities on the day such as the ‘Layering Up Challenge’  to help win points for Burton Albion and secure our place in the race for the Planet League Cup.

Rich Holmes, Head of Partnerships at Planet League, said: “It is all about finding ways to get people interested in such an important movement so it is great to see people actively engaging in our activities and hopefully it will inspire them to make changes in their habits and think about how they can make a difference. The competition is a great way for fans to get involved and feel rewarded for their effort.”

Didn’t get a chance to sign up? Don’t worry there still time to represent Burton Albion – check out how to here: https://planetleague.co.uk/ .

Wayne Thomas, from Pure Ionic Water, who are now the official hydration partners of The Burton Albion Community Trust, is encouraging fans to take part in the ‘Big Billion Bottle Battle’ to help eliminate the use of single-use plastic bottles in the football community. If you are visiting the Pirelli Stadium you can now fill up your water bottles from the Ionic Water dispenser in the Community Football Centre and play your part in the battle against single use plastics and support charitable causes.

Michael Mancienne and Ciaran Gilligan took part in the Planet League challenge and competed against Junior Brewers to see who could put on the most layers in thirty seconds.

Michael said: “It was great to see so many fans here today especially getting involved in the challenges and asking questions about how to be eco-friendly.

Ciaran said: “The message is so important to Burton Albion and the community, so it’s been amazing to see so many fans wanting to get involved.”

Saturday saw the launch of our Utilita Football Rebooted drop off point, which allows fans to bring old football boots (or Astro turf boots), that are no longer in use to be rehomed to ensure that they don’t end up in landfill.

We also launched our Pedal to the Pitch incentive to encourage fans to cycle to Pirelli Stadium on matchdays or when visiting the Community Football Centre by using our bike station where you can chain your bike safely for free.

Head of Community Matt Hancock said: “We wanted to relay the message to all of our fans that eco-friendly practices don’t have to be boring and that it is never too late to start changing your habits to help the environment.”
