AUSTIN, Texas — While the boil water notice in Austin has been lifted and tap water is deemed safe for consumption again, there are still necessary steps to take before you return to your normal routines.

Before drinking or cooking with your water, customers should flush all water sources in their homes including household pipes, water fountains, ice makers and other facets.

This means letting the water flow through your pipes to make sure the water is fresh. You can do so by letting your cold-water faucets run for a minute, make three batches of ice and discard and run water softeners through a regeneration cycle.

Food enterprises are required by Austin Public Health to flush all water lines. This includes lines connected to any coffee machine, water dispenser, ice maker and any other equipment used to prepare food.

Pipes can be flushed by running hot and cold water through them for two minutes. Any appliance that uses tap water, such as glass washers and dishwashers, should be flushed, cleaned and sanitized.

Drinking fountains should be run for two minutes to flush out the system, and ice machines should be taken care of by manufacturer’s instructions, including at least making one extra batch of ice and discarding it.

Austin Water reminds customers that they do not need to worry about having their water tested individually. The notice was rescinded when Austin’s drinking water quality matches that of national and state drinking water standards.
